Listen, Libraries, and You Will Hear…

The Americans for Libraries Council have kicked off their nationwide “listening tour” this past weekend, starting in the imminently news-friendly library of Salinas, CA.

This is a wonderful potential for nation-wide advocacy for libraries. As one article reported:

More than 90 people packed the center for two hours to field questions and comments from the board of directors of the Americans for Libraries Council.

…The council’s panelists are gathering information to formalize a report and a national poll about libraries.

Elected officials, librarians, educators, residents and students took turns talking about the lack of computers in their homes, lack of resources for children and lack of services for adults. For instance, Radford said only seven of his 33 students have computers in their home.

I don’t know what all information ALC will collect as they go across the country, but it’s bound to be useful to emphasize the value of libraries.

I have no information so far as to whether they will be stopping through Illinois or, if so, whether they’ll be in our neck of the woods. This could be one to keep an eye on, though, so as we hear about their results or of more stops, we’ll let you know.
