Let Your Legislators Know You Oppose Filtering TODAY!

The Illinois General Assembly is on hiatus until next Tuesday, which means now is a great time to catch your legislators at their home offices and talk to them about some important issues.

Most important on the list right now is HB 1727, the Internet Screening in Public Libraries Act. ILA sent out an action alert last month on this bill, and sent out another one (not yet available on their website) just the other day. This bill has already passed out of committee, and could be voted on as early as next week, so the time for action is definitely NOW.

In case you’re not up on the specifics, this bill would impose mandatory filters on all public and school libraries in Illinois. Adding insult to injury, an amendment was added to this bill which, if passed, would require that, should a library deem it allowable to temporarily disable a filter for a child’s use, the library would be required to provide constant supervision of the computer user.
