Tuesday’s Treasure

Here’s something a little different! A portrait of a blacksmith in Deerfield and his grandson. That little boy has a grin a mile wide and I have to say, Grandpa looks pretty proud standing there in his blacksmith apron with those massive arms. I can’t quite make out what the little boy is holding though.

The Library of Congress now offers RSS feeds for news, webcasts, notifications of what’s new on the Web and more through their site. I’ve subscribed to three and some of you may be interested in some of the others as well. From this same page, you can also access RSS feeds from the Copyright Office.

Tuesday’s Treasure

How could I resist highlighting this? It appears to be a handdrawn Christmas wish from someone stationed in France. A rather talented individual and a little unusual for Digital Past, we usually don’t get off this continent! This is from the Fort Sheridan collection held by the Lake County Discovery Museum. Happiest of Holiday Wishes to you all!

Story of the Christmas Tree Ship

I ran across this timely entry today from the Wisconsin Historical Society. They have several RSS feeds which I subscribe to and find them a worth-while read. This is updated findings on the fate of the Christmas Tree Ship which they explored this past Summer. Captain Schuenemann and his schooner Rouse Simmons often brought Christmas trees down from Michigan to Chicago. He’d decorate the whole ship up and let people on board to buy their tree, but one year he didn’t make it…

Tuesday’s Treasure

As you may have noticed, Digital Past has A LOT of infomation from the Civil War and WWII, but did you also know we have items dating from WWI, the Spanish American War, Vietnam, Korea, etc? I know we get more all the time and I know we’re going to get some great Civil War additions soon. Today I thought I would feature a portrait of Barney Carl Ivy from Highland Park. He served in WWI. Doesn’t he look dapper?

Tuesday’s Treasure

Well, the first offical day of winter is coming up pretty quick, along with the holidays. Winter makes me think of snow and that makes me think of sleigh rides! Ok, I’ve never been on one, but I do have Mom’s antique cutter (one-horse open sleigh) in my garage that someday I will fix up and hitch up to my horse. I have a lot of great family photos of various family members in that sleigh pulled by a dark bay horse named Bill (Prince is a bright red bay). Anyway, I had to go find a sleigh photo in Digital Past and I did! This one is from the Lake County Discovery Museum and is of a family near Diamond Lake.
