Illuminated HeritageJune 28, 2007 Genealogy of the CatYou know my love for kitties of all shapes and sizes by now, I’m sure, so you shouldn’t be too terribly surprised to see me posting the news about cats’ roots! Genetic testing has determined that all domestic cats and several species of wild cat came from the near Eastern wildcat, known scientifically as Felis silvestris lybica. There are two articles (one, two) in my feeds about this discovery and that domestic cats date back a long long ways. Enjoy! posted by Kay at 3:13 pm | Comments (0) June 27, 2007 Queen Hatshepsut’s Mummy FoundI heard about this one my local news this morning (which was a bit surprising, we usually don’t get historical finds!) and now I see it in my feeds. Anyway, the mummy of Queen Hatshepsut has been found. She ruled in the 15th century BC and was known for portraying herself as a man by wearing a false beard and dressing like a man. She’s commonly known as one of the most successful female pharaohs of Egypt. My news said this could rival the find of King Tut…so keep your eyes open! posted by Kay at 10:47 am | Comments (0) June 26, 2007 Tuesday’s TreasureWow, doesn’t this just cool you off, looking at that pretty blue lake? In case you don’t recognize it, this is the east end of “Pleasure Pier” (aka Navy Pier) from the Lake County Discovery Museum. Just such a pretty card!

This could certainly be helpful in getting your hands on some of those obscure books genealogists find they need! posted by Kay at 10:08 am | Comments (0) June 19, 2007 Tuesday’s TreasureThis is quite interesting! Mickey (from Arlington Heights) showed us this at one of the Digital Past demos in May and wow, I never knew we had such things around here and in such plain site! But this is a photo of the five radar towers at the Arlington Heights Army Air Defense site. Pretty nifty, huh?

That’s right, while browsing the shelves at Borders this weekend, I found Everton’s Genealogical Helper May/June issue with an article about the best US digital image sites and Digital Past was included! Yeay! It’s a nice overview of the project and features a screenshot of the home page. It was a fantastic surprise! So, go check it out yourselves, it’s on page 72. You’ll notice the addition of their award on the front page of Digital Past as well. posted by Kay at 1:19 pm | Comments (0) June 8, 2007 WWII Missing List Now OnlineThe Department of Defense POW/Missing Personnel Office (DPMO) has now made available online the list of those still unaccounted for from World War II.
