iGoogle and a Librarian: Path to Personalization Nirvana

Dr. John Jaeger from Dallas Baptist University just posted on Dig-Ref this great article from CNN. The article mentions that “Google introduced seven templates for creating personalized “gadgets” — publishing features — that include tools for publishing photos, sending virtual greeting cards or creating personal profiles or lists of favorite songs or films.

“I look at personalized search and I think it is one of the biggest advances we have had in the last couple of years,” Marissa Mayer, Google’s vice president in charge of search and user experience, told a news briefing.”

I look at this as an opportunity for librarians to insert themselves into the process. Many people already come to our libraries to try out these services and some libraries offer training. If you add the “fun” stuff with customized searching and the abi8lity to create contact Librarians could help instruct and direct people ion getting the most out of their online experience.
